History of the breed. The Jersey breed of cows, renowned for its milk productivity, originates from the island of Jersey, located in the English Channel off the coast of France. This island is home to one of the oldest dairy breeds, with a history spanning nearly six centuries. Jersey cows were known in England as early as 1771 and quickly became popular due to their high milk yield and fat content. At that time, cattle from the island of Jersey were referred to as Alderney, but this name was later replaced with Jersey. In the 1850s, Jersey cattle were imported to the USA, where they continue to thrive to this day. These animals are remarkable herbivores, demonstrating high efficiency in intensive grazing conditions. They show greater resilience to high temperatures compared to larger breeds. Exterior. Their body is proportional but has angular outlines. The height at the withers of these cows is usually about 120 cm, and their weight ranges from 400 to 500 kg. Bulls are larger, with weights reaching up to 800 kg at maturity. Jersey cows are dairy animals, so they have a slender and elegant build. The Jersey breed has its own characteristics that distinguish it from other breeds. These cows have a small muzzle and a narrow forehead, and their neck is proportional to the body. The body is flat, with well-defined ribs. The chest is wide, and the back is concave. The hooves may appear irregular, but this is not the case. The udder of Jersey cows is large and has a bowl shape. Muscle mass depends on the conditions of keeping and feeding. Starchy feeds promote muscle growth, so they are given only to bulls. It is normal for dairy cows to have 10% to 20% muscle mass relative to their total body weight. Jersey cows have a reddish coat, which can sometimes be light brown. The body may have dark or white spots, with dark spots on the muzzle and neck of bulls, and an almost black stripe along the back. Conditions of keeping. The Jersey breed of cows is characterized by its hardiness and ease of maintenance, making it quite attractive for farmers. These animals adapt well to almost any climate, provided there is a warm barn with good ventilation and adequate lighting. However, in addition to ensuring comfortable living conditions, it is extremely important to maintain cleanliness in the barn. Furthermore, when constructing the barn, it is necessary to consider the distance from noise sources, such as airports, highways, and railways, as Jersey cows are highly sensitive to noise stress.

Ration. The ration for Jersey cows should be diverse and adapted to seasonal changes and the time of calving. Although Jersey cows do not have a very large appetite, their diet should include fresh grass, compound feed, hay, and vegetables. The daily feeding norm for a Jersey cow may look as follows: 20 kg of grass, 4 kg of hay, 5 kg of compound feed, and 5 kg of beets. In the winter period, when fresh grass is scarce, it can be replaced with corn and sunflower, as well as adding vitamins and minerals from special feeds. Vegetable supplements will be gladly eaten by dairy cows, but they should be given with caution. The starch contained in vegetables can negatively affect the productivity of cows. It is also important to control water consumption: cows need about 20 liters of water per drinking session, while calves require 3–4 liters. Animals should be watered twice a day.
